How to Check Car Oil

A Mechanic's Hand Pulling Out an Oil Dipstick on a Car to Check Oil Level

It’s important to know how to check oil levels in your car to ensure you have the right amount of oil and that the oil is free of debris. This will help protect your engine’s moving parts. Whether you have synthetic or conventional, you’ll check your oil the same way! If you need assistance or would rather have the professionals take a look for you, contact the BMW of Gwinnett Place service team!

How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Most new vehicles have electronic oil monitors rather than a traditional dipstick. Before you check oil levels, check your owner’s manual for more specific information on where to find this. Once you’ve read the instructions, here’s how to check oil levels in your car with a traditional dipstick:

  • Park your vehicle on level ground and turn off your engine. It’s important to make sure you wait until your engine is cold to proceed.
  • In order to find the dipstick, you’ll need to open your vehicle’s hood.
  • Next, pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe off any oil from the end of it.
  • Lastly, re-insert the dipstick and pull it back out. Take a look at both sides to determine what the oil level is.

When checking the dipstick, you’ll know the oil level is safe if the top of the oil streak falls between two marks or is within a cross-hatched area. If that’s not the case, you will need to add more oil. If you’re performing an at-home oil change, always buy the grade of oil recommended in your owner’s manual. When adding more oil at home, be sure to buy the grade of oil recommended in the owner’s manual, and be sure to check the dipstick continually while slowly adding more oil as to not go over the max fill line.

Why You Should Check Your Car’s Oil Level

Maintaining the right oil level is essential to vehicle performance and safety. That’s why it’s important to know how to check car oil. It’s recommended that you have the oil changed roughly twice a year, but this can differ depending on your driving habits and the vehicle. Now that you know how to check your car oil, you can check for leaks or incorrect oil levels without even heading to our service department.
