You’ve probably heard people refer to a “beamer” on Atlanta roads. This is one of the nicknames of BMW vehicles, which also include “bimmer,” “beamer,” and “beemer.” Where do these names come from? The nickname originated in the UK with beamer being used specifically for BMW motorcycles. In the 1970s as BMW vehicles became increasingly popular in the states, the nickname took off in references to any BMW vehicle. The Chinese call BMW models bao-ma, which means precious horse, and it has assumed a position as a status symbol.
There is talk that the blue-and-white checkered pattern on the BMW logo resembles a turning propeller. While the brand did originate from an aircraft engine manufacturer, this rumor is untrue. The blue and white pattern remains at the forefront of BMW vehicles to honor the Bavarian flag. In fact, throughout the brand’s entire history, the logo has only been updated a handful of times. One of these updates happened recently, however. While it still maintains the tribute paid to the Bavarian flag, the outer circle of the logo is now clear rather than black. The font that spells out “BMW” was also updated for a more sleek and clean appearance.
BMW or “The Ultimate Driving Machine” BMW slogan debuted in 1974. It remained as such for decades but was replaced for a few short years in 2010 with the slogan “Joy.” In 2012, BMW brought back that original 1974 slogan.
