Used Car Buying: What You Need to Know

To compare CPO vs. pre-owned vehicles, it’s important to establish distinctions between both. Used cars have had previous owners and can vary in terms of make, model year, mileage, etc. Due to these differences, and because they’ve had prior owners, they are more affordable than new and CPO models. Many Atlanta car buyers will be happy to know that we have a selection of used vehicles priced under $15k, giving you plenty of budget-friendly options.

What is the main difference between pre-owned and certified pre-owned models? That would be the mileage. While a pre-owned car with 100,000 miles might seem risky, the truth is that many vehicles can last for hundreds of thousands of miles with regular service visits. In any case, when you’re buying a new-to-you car, keep the following in mind:

  • While OEMs don’t require that most used cars are inspected before sale, BMW of Gwinnett Place wants to be sure all our Lawrenceville customers get the best value for their dollar. We’ve hand-selected all our pre-owned models and private sellers don’t have the reputation of our well-established dealership.
  • You should discuss any vehicle issues you notice with the dealership or a private seller. If you decide to purchase the car, even if it has some minor problems, that’s 100% your choice. Just make sure you factor money for repairs into your shopping budget.
  • With proper maintenance and care, some vehicles last upwards of 200,000 miles and high-mileage pre-owned cars aren’t bad choices, especially if you’re on a strict budget.

Buying a CPO Car: What You Need to Know

While certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles have had previous owners, they aren’t the standard used cars you see on many Suwanee-area used car lots. These models have been thoroughly inspected by a certified technician and are backed by BMW manufacturer warranties. These are considered the gold standard of pre-owned vehicles and only models that meet the BMW Certified program standards will earn this title. For example, to be a BMW CPO model, it must meet the following:

  • Must have more than 300 miles, but less than 60,000 miles on the odometer
  • Must be five years old or newer
  • The CARFAX™ or AutoCheck® reports are reviewed to ensure only genuine BMW parts have been used
  • Must pass a tire, wheel, and brake inspection
  • Passes a body condition, fit, and finish inspection
  • Will pass a mechanical inspection
  • Passes a Diagnostic and Road test to be approved by a BMW certified technician

BMW certified pre-owned vehicles are usually from newer model years with less mileage. They will come with more modern automotive features for Atlanta commutes, and if that’s what you want, a CPO model can be the perfect choice.
